Core Learning Programs.

Literacy

At Echuca Twin Rivers Primary School, our Literacy program is designed to build strong, confident readers and writers from the early years through to Year 6. In Years Prep to 2, we implement the "InitiaLit program", a research-based approach that systematically develops phonics, reading fluency, comprehension and writing skills. From Years 3 to 6, students continue to strengthen their spelling and word knowledge through the "SpellEx" program, which provides explicit instruction in spelling patterns, morphology and vocabulary. Across all year levels, our teaching of reading and writing is purposeful, engaging and aligned with the latest evidence in literacy education. We aim to nurture a love of reading, a curiosity for language, and the skills students need to confidently express themselves and understand the world around them.

Inquiry

At Echuca Twin Rivers Primary School, our Inquiry curriculum encourages students to explore big ideas, ask meaningful questions and make connections to the world around them. Each department follows a two-year Inquiry cycle that covers a range of rich and engaging topics linked to eight key concepts: Social Justice, Sustainability, Discovery, Connections, Identity, Community, Creativity and Change. Through hands-on experiences, research, collaboration and reflection, students develop critical thinking skills, deepen their understanding of key issues, and build their capacity to become active, informed citizens. Our Inquiry units are designed to spark curiosity, foster student voice, and provide authentic learning experiences that prepare students for a complex and ever-changing world.

Numeracy

At Echuca Twin Rivers Primary School, we are committed to developing confident, curious and capable mathematicians. Our Numeracy program focuses on building strong foundational skills while encouraging students to think critically, solve problems and apply mathematical understanding in real-world contexts. Through hands-on activities, collaborative tasks, and differentiated instruction, students explore number, algebra, measurement, geometry, statistics and probability in engaging and meaningful ways. We aim to foster a positive mindset towards mathematics, where mistakes are seen as learning opportunities and all students are supported to achieve personal growth and success.

Wellbeing

Echuca Twin Rivers Primary School is a School that cares –Every Child Matters.

At our school, we believe that learning flourishes when students feel safe, supported, and truly understood. That’s why we offer a range of inclusive, innovative, and student-focused programs designed to support the whole child—academically, socially, and emotionally. We know that supporting our students' well-being is crucial to allowing our students to be ready to learn and engage in their classroom environment. School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) is an enormous part of our Wellbeing support and learning here at ETRPS. Please refer to the SWPBS tab for more information.

At Echuca Twin Rivers Primary School, we go beyond the classroom to create a caring community. We have a range of programs and support here for our students including:
  • Breakfast Club – This runs every morning from 8:35am. All students are welcome in the Centre for Breakfast Club. Food Bank supports us in ensuring every child starts the day nourished and ready to learn!

  • Buddies Program – At the beginning of a school year all students are assigned a Buddy. Our Junior Students are supported with a Senior Buddy.  Throughout the year our Senior mentors and support younger ones, building friendships and a strong sense of belonging. They focus on Bullying prevention and explore what kindness and connectedness look like in the school environment.

  • Dogs Connect – Our wellbeing dogs Frankie and Bernie are a wonderful part of our school community, helping reduce anxiety and build emotional connections. Frankie and Bernie visit classrooms and support our students to feel safe and regulated in the classroom environment. A number of our senior students are ‘Dogs Connect Leaders’ and are responsible for the care of Frankie and Bernie throughout the school day.

  • Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships – Evidence-based social-emotional learning that empowers students to thrive.
The Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships (RRRR) and the Building Respectful Relationships (BRR) learning materials are designed for primary and secondary school teachers to develop students’ social, emotional and positive relationship skills.
The RRRR learning materials include 8 Social and Emotional Learning topics across all levels of primary and secondary education:
  • Emotional Literacy
  • Personal Strengths
  • Positive Coping
  • Problem Solving
  • Stress Management
  • Help Seeking
  • Gender and Identity
  • Positive Gender Relationships.
Respectful Relationships is a school program that teaches children how to treat others with kindness, fairness and respect. It helps students learn how to build healthy friendships, resolve conflict peacefully, and understand and manage their emotions.
This means your child is learning important life skills like:
  • Respecting others’ differences
  • Using kind words and actions
  • Standing up to bullying
  • Working well with others
  • Knowing what respectful behaviour looks like in relationships
It also helps create a safer and more supportive school environment for every student.
  • Berry Street Education Model – The Berry Street Education Model is a research-based approach to teaching that supports the social, emotional, and academic needs of every child. It was designed especially for students who may have experienced challenges such as trauma, anxiety, or difficulty engaging in traditional learning.
At our school, this model helps us:
  • Build strong, trusting relationships between teachers and students
  • Create predictable routines and a sense of safety
  • Teach emotional regulation and resilience
  • Support every child to be “ready to learn” each day
It’s not just about what students learn—it’s how they learn best. With BSEM, we meet students where they’re at and help them grow with confidence, care, and structure. BSEM is based on Trauma-informed teaching that meets students where they are, academically and emotionally.
  • Hands-On Learning – Practical, real-world learning that re-engages students and builds confidence. In Year 5 and 6 students have the opportunity to become part of our HOL team. HOL

  • Sensory Den – A calming, purpose-built sensory room designed to support self-regulation and sensory needs. We have a dedicated classroom space within our school environment that is open at each break time for students to access. This is also part of student programs where appropriate. Our Sensory Den has a variety of tools such as a mini trampoline, kinetic sand, playdough, lego, a fish tank, lighting, a Kloud Sac foam bean bag and mellow mats.

  • On-Site Occupational Therapist – Anna Nunan is our OT here at ETRPS. She provides small groups and targeted support to students requiring fine motor or gross motor support. She works with students who do not have access to NDIS outside of school. Her support can include integrated support for motor, sensory, and emotional development.

  • Fidget Tools & Flexible Learning Spaces – Adaptable environments that recognise diverse learning styles and needs.
Within each classroom space we have a dedicated Fidget Toolkit to support our students with regulation and engagement in their learning. Our fidget toolkits have a variety of tools as recommended by our School OT Anna. Each classroom space has a Zen Den and a variety of flexible seating tools. We encourage our students to use a variety of learning tools such as wobble stools, lap desks and wobble cushions to support their learning.
  • Dedicated Wellbeing Team – Daily student check-ins, emotional support, and a proactive approach to mental health.
At ETRPS we have a dedicated Wellbeing Team who support various roles across the school.
We have a Leading Teacher who is our Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader. Tegan is full time in this role and is supporting the Mental Health in Primary Schools initiative. She supports teachers, students and families by providing support in planning for student needs and leading the Wellbeing curriculum. She liaises with Allied Health teams, school staff, families and external department staff to support students to thrive at school.
Our Primary Wellbeing Officer Nicole is available 4 days a week and supports the wellbeing of our students, families and staff holistically. This may be through 1:1 direct contact, liaising with and referring to external service providers including support services, allied health and paediatrics.
Our Disability Inclusion support staff member Kimmie works alongside our students and teachers to obtain additional funding support for students with additional needs. She also supports our students with check in’s and wellbeing support.
Our school Wellbeing Team also meets fortnightly with Student Support Services (SSS) Psychologist & Speech Pathologist staff to discuss referrals for students regarding assessments to support their learning and wellbeing needs.
We are very fortunate to have Kristy from Anglicare Early Help Family Services on site with us at ETRPS 1 day a week (Thursdays). She is here to support you and your family in your community and be available where you live, work, learn and play. Early Help is available to parents/caregivers and families with children from birth to 18 years. Early Help can provide;
• Individual support for families and caregivers
• Safe and confidential parenting groups
• Connection to peer support groups
• Support, information and referrals to help with parenting, child/adolescent behaviour, housing, family problems, mental health and disability.
